How to Read Tarot Cards

When you want to learn how to read tarot cards, there are two basic types of reading. One is a psychic reading, where you probably only need a card or some personal connection in order to trigger your intuition and a flood of information.

The second way to learn to read tarot cards is to look at the colours, pictures and symbols. You notice what is happening in the card and observe any feelings that you might get.

For most people, especially when you start to read tarot cards, the second way is the easiest to work with. You will be surprised at the accuracy of your readings.

Choose a deck of tarot cards that you feel comfortable with. There is a lot of choice, with decks based on almost every conceivable aspect of life, culture, history or mythology.

A good starting point is the Rider Waite deck of Tarot cards because those tarot cards have clear pictures and the imagery is not frightening.

In a new deck, the cards are generally ordered with the 22 cards of the Major Arcana first, usually beginning with the Fool card (numbered 0) and then the four Minor suits of Cups, Wands, Pentacles and Swords in the order of Ace, cards 2-10 and the court cards.

Take your cards out of pack and have a really good look at them. If you have enough room, it can be very useful to lay out all of the cards on a table in front of you. Otherwise, lay them out in the sections of the Major Arcana and then each of the suits.

One of the best ways to learn to read tarot cards is to look very carefully at each card. Notice what you can see and if anything jumps out at you, look at the colours and see if they are bright and cheerful or more dark and challenging. What is happening in the card? A picture really does speak1000 words.

How do you feel when you look at the card? Do you hear any voices in your head or do you suddenly think of a person or a situation?

Notice and observe your own thoughts, feelings and reactions and make a note of those because those will be your intuition speaking to you and those will be the perfect and right answers for you personally.

Then you can check with your favourite book to add extra meaning to your own interpretations.

Your reactions to a tarot card may be different from what is stated in any book and that is quite natural because the tarot cards speak to everyone in a different way.

On your journey to learn how to read tarot cards, a book or a course can be great starting point and can fill in the gaps where you are not sure of a meaning.

Keep practising and have fun. Learning to read tarot cards is a wonderful journey.
